Behaviors We Don’t Always Recognize as Self-Harming

Self-harm is one of the most distressing and problematic behaviors that may affect parents, caregivers, family members, and children with autism and such people may face the resulting problems. The incidence of this behavior often has vague and complex causes and poses risks to health and quality of life. Interventions in the usual way are not the solution and most of the time require specialized measures.

What are self-harming behaviors?

Self-harm refers to behaviors in which a person causes harm to himself or herself by performing movements and actions. Negative symptoms

Overeating is a behavior in which the person harms himself. Approximately 2% of the world’s population suffers from binge overeating disorder. 

Eating less

Many people who do not eat enough say they do it for their own sake. However, there is often a problem with personal appearance or other psychological reasons.

Appearing inadequate by force

The fact that a person deliberately shows him inadequate to achieve something is actually a reflection of his insecurity in some matters.

Behaving out of the ordinary to harm others

The negative things that a person feels towards himself begin to harm not only himself but also those around him after a while.

Did not hurt yourself

Self-harm is a state of self-dislike and can have serious psychological and mental consequences.

Don’t feel sorry

Failure to listen to advice, refuse to consult an expert, and generally refuse to accept help is actually a form of personal sabotage. 

Don’t spend a lot of money

It may surprise you that gambling or unnecessary shopping is on this list. However, excessive spending is also one of the methods of self-harm.

Sabotage of relationships

Sabotage of relationships with many types such as jealousy, excessive possession, emotional manipulation, and violence is actually a reflection of the person’s thought “I am not worthy of being loved”.

Given all of this, sometimes it may not be that easy to actually avoid self-injurious behavior. The most important thing to do in such situations is to remember that you are not alone and not be afraid to ask for help.
